The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC) encourages you not to forget your pets when preparing for potential disasters. All dogs on St. Croix are required by law to be licensed with AWC. The cost is only $5.

Owners can also microchip their pets for $25 for added security.

Pets should be brought inside or in an enclosed area for their own safety. Call 778-1650 or 778-1651 to reach AWC animal control or to report a missing or found pet. For an animal abuse or dog bite emergency call 911 and then call AWC.Please see the following tips from the Humane Society of the United States for pet preparedness.

Pet owners can reduce their animals’ chances of being at risk during a disaster by following the suggestions below.

Put a collar with visible identification on your pets, including indoor-only pets.

Keep pictures of your pets on hand for identification purposes.

Create a pet emergency kit (see below) and refresh the items every few months.

Talk to your neighbors about how they can help your pets if you are not at home when disaster strikes.

Pet emergency kits should include:

Three-or-more-day supply of food in airtight, waterproof containers, and drinking water.

Bowls for food and water.

Current photos and physical description of your pets, including details on markings.

Medications, vaccination records and first aid pet supplies.

Comfort items such as a toy and blanket.

Small garbage bags.

For dogs include: leash, harness and a sturdy carrier large enough to use as a sleeping area.

For cats include: litter and litter box and a sturdy carrier large enough for transport and for your cat to use as a temporary “apartment” for several days.

Here at the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC) we work hard towards eradicating animal cruelty and neglect—to provide hope. According to Merriam-Webster, Neglect means to give little attention or respect to. Pets come to us in incredible stages of suffering because they have simply been ignored and disregarded.

We need you to join us in stamping out neglect and to become a member of AWC. To help us in our mission Hope Gibson, a local artist, has hand-crafted an exclusive heart jewelry pendant that will be provided to all AWC members.

The pendant is in our organizational turquoise color and the hearts mirror the upside down heart in our logo. We ask you to become a member to join us and to show your support to end neglect on St. Croix. Wear your turquoise Heart of Hope with pride.

When people see it, they will know that you have helped the shelter animals of St. Croix. Fill out the enclosed brochure and join us today.

Based on membership level, you will be thanked with either a small, medium, or large size pendant.

Membership levels include member bumper sticker, newsletter, and vote at annual meeting. Levels are as follows:

Chance is the second air cargo trip that AWC has conducted in April. St. Croix lacks an air cargo option, but St. Thomas offers that option. The challenge then is for AWC to find a way to send our pets to St. Thomas and then transfer them to American Airlines air cargo office. Fortunately for Chance, Chuck Fisher, the owner of the Palms volunteered to fly Chance to St. Thomas.

AWC volunteers were able to track Chance online as he traveled from St. Thomas to Boston, overnighted, and then traveled on to Seattle, Washington where Seattle Pure Breed Dog Rescue (SPDR) received him. After only one day, Chance was adopted to his new home in Woodinville, Washington complete with a fenced yard and a pond. Lucky Dog!

AWC hopes to expand our ability to send pets air cargo. Volunteer help with travelers, pilots, and meeting flights on the ground in St. Thomas are needed. AWC also needs travel crates.

To find out more or to volunteer to help call the animal welfare center at 778-1650 or visit www.StCroixAWC.org.

For more information, please call Gretchen Sherrill or email communications@stcroixawc.org.

Founded in 1973, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center (AWC) provides and promotes the humane treatment of animals through humane education, animal protection and community service.
